The Indigenous Lepchas were the original inhabitants of Sikkim, dating back even before Tibetan rule. The Namgyal Dynasty, which started in 1642, marked the beginning of Tibetan Buddhism in Sikkim. During British Rule, this territory became a British protectorate. Even after India’s independence in 1947, Sikkim remained a British Protectorate till 1950 and became an Indian Protectorate, which lasted till 1975. Sikkim became the 22nd Indian state on May 16, 1975, which marked the establishment of democratic governance in this region.

By Air: Sikkim’s only airport is in Pakyong, and it receives domestic flights. However, the most convenient and nearest airport is the Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in Siliguri, which is around 120 kms from the capital city of Gangtok.
By Rail: New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in Siliguri is where you can reach from all parts of India. From the NJP station, you can reach Gangtok in 4-5 hours by booking a cab or taxi.
By Road: Tourists can reach various parts in Sikkim, such as Gangtok, Pelling, Namchi, or Lachung, by road from Siliguri. The road journey is filled with lush green nature and mountainous roads, which makes it a fantastic experience.
Inner Line Permits (ILP): For foreigners and Indian citizens who are not Sikkimese citizens, it is mandatory to obtain an ILP for spots such as Tsomgo Lake and Yumthang. This is because such areas are restricted by the Indian Army.
Duration of ILP: ILPs are valid for 15 to 30 days and can be renewed through designated authorities. For foreign nationals, passports and visas might be required for obtaining an ILP.
